Ankara Güven Hospital Kardiology Department Specialist Dr. Bahadır Alan made a statement on the Heart Week, which takes place from 8th to 14th of April. Dr. Alan stated that there has been a decrease in deaths due to heart disease, and emphasized the importance of taking care of our hearts by following the recommendations of modern medicine. He highlighted the advancements in technology that have led to improved diagnosis and treatment options for heart diseases, resulting in a decrease in deaths related to heart diseases, especially coronary artery disease, in Western societies. Dr. Alan also mentioned that with early diagnosis, increased treatment alternatives, and awareness, chronic diseases like heart failure have become a focal point in clinical management.

He emphasized the importance of controlling risk factors to reduce the development and progression of heart diseases, highlighting lifestyle changes, early diagnosis, regular health screenings, and proper treatment methods as key factors. Dr. Alan mentioned that by controlling risk factors such as smoking, high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, lack of fruits and vegetables consumption, alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity, the risk of heart attacks can be reduced by more than 90%.

Dr. Alan also pointed out that stressful living conditions, sedentary lifestyles, obesity, uncontrolled hypertension, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, kidney failure, and smoking are known risk factors for heart and vascular diseases. He advised individuals to adopt healthy habits, reduce stress, quit smoking, and follow a Mediterranean diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and fish to protect their hearts and overall health.

Furthermore, Dr. Alan shared 10 important recommendations for heart health, including quitting smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy diet, reducing salt intake, increasing physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, seeking treatment for psychiatric problems, following prescribed medications, and undergoing regular check-ups as per the doctor’s recommendations.

In conclusion, Dr. Alan emphasized the importance of addressing known risk factors, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and seeking medical guidance to protect the heart and prevent heart diseases. He also highlighted the significance of avoiding factors that contribute to air pollution, as it can increase the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
